GALATIANS 3: ANSWER TO THE KEY OBJECTION

“Galatians 3:28 is actually not about divisions in the church and the family but is only talking about who can be saved.”

No. No. No! Galatians 3:28’s wording, context, and parallel passages show that it must refer to actual life in the church, not just to who can be saved, and not just to individuals’ relationship to God. Each of these three pairs describe social standing, so to say that they have nothing to do with social standing is to deny their most obvious meaning. Galatians is largely about an actual, physical, earthly dispute between Jews and gentiles. When Peter withdrew from table fellowship with gentiles, Paul “opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned . . . [of] hypocrisy . . . [and] not acting in line with the truth of the gospel” (Gal. 2:11–14). After denouncing Peter’s unequal treatment of Jews and gentiles, Paul defends the equal standing of Jew and gentile in Christ and expands it to include slave and free and male and female.

If this verse did not repudiate male-female division in Christ, then no one would try to limit its application to who can be saved. After all, when Paul expresses almost the exact same thought in Colossians, we all understand that he is talking about life here on earth in Christian fellowship:

Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. (Col. 3:11–12)
